Gina Mita gave an very informative presentation on starting seeds saying it is a less expensive than buying plants and a way to keep your heirloom seeds. Gina also gave hints on using newspaper to make seed starting pots, and other hints for keeping your costs low.

Planters and Gardens in Spring Glen Center

The Spring Glen Garden Club looking for new members
The Club has been a
fixture in the Hamden community since 1925, a chartered member of
The Federated Garden Clubs of Connecticut, Inc., and National Garden
Clubs, Inc., since 1929.
The Garden
Club ongoing projects include gardens and planters in Spring Glen, Poppy’s
Garden on the Farmington Canal Trail and the Historical Herb Garden at The
Jonathan Dickerman House.
The Club
donated 10 American Elm hybrid trees to the Hamden Center Park as a result of
its successful Wreaths for Trees program.
Other
projects of the Club are a Rhododendron Garden at the entry to Lockwood
Cottage and the Red Oak tree (Quercus rubra) affectionately known as
“Annie Oakley” planted in the Eli Whitney Park.
The Spring Glen
Garden Club is looking for new members, who are not only interested in
horticultural pursuits but civic beautification and preservation of our natural
resources. There are no residency requirements to belong, our members are as
local as Hamden, North Haven, Branford, or as far flung as Goshen. For further membership information, please

The next meeting of The Spring Glen Garden Club
The next
meeting of The Spring Glen Garden Club will be Monday May 11, 2026, at Lockwood
Cottage 890 Evergreen Ave. After
luncheon beginning at 11:30 am (bring a sandwich, dessert and beverage will be
served) and a short business meeting the speaker will begin at 1pm. The speaker will be Pat Sabosik and her
subject will be “Pollinators”.
Pat is an
advanced master gardener, maintaining current certification since 2017. In her master gardener role, she manages a
pollinator garden at the Hill-Stead Museum, a research and educational garden,
and teaches new master gardeners about native plants and the insects who depend
on them.
Pat is the
owner of Silver Spade Garden Design, a small design and consulting business.
To
complement the perennial garden at Hill-Stead, Pat’s own garden is a shady
woodland garden with a mix of native and non-native plants and a refuge for
birds and small animals.
Pat’s
garden, participates in the Garden Conservancy Open Days program.

The Spring Glen Garden Club to help Celebrate Hamden's Earth Day
Members of The Spring Glen Garden Club will be at
Hamden’s Earth Day Celebration. The
Celebration will be held at the Thorton Wilder Auditorium at the Miller Library
on this Saturday, April 25th from 10a to 3 pm. Pictured plants will be available for a
donation to The Spring Glen Garden Club. The Club will also be giveaways: bookmarks,
seed paper, seeds and mini greenhouse in honor of Earth Day.
